Writing stories into images:

The narrative potential of composition

Instructor: Sarah Pollman

Professional photographer, writer and curator

www.sarahpollman.com

28 October, 2018

Compositional strategies can help tell stories. This will be a workshop that includes both theory and shooting . Looking at the work of professional photographers in a gallery (TBD), we will have conversations about how all the elements of photographs work together, and how the composition contributes to the conceptual meaning of the photographs.

From there, we will shoot together in Boston’s historic Copley Square, experimenting with composition in order to tell stories with our images.

About the instructor:

Sarah Pollman works at the intersection of art and art history to connect contemporary imaging culture with its historical counterparts. Her research and projects examine the role of photography in the creation of memory and planned amnesia for personal events, looking specifically at the function of vernacular snapshot photography.

Her visual projects have been shown internationally, including exhibitions at the Danforth Art Museum, the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Rourke Art Museum. She is the recipient of the Art Writing Workshop from the AICA-USA and Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program, a Curatorial Opportunity Program grant at the New Art Center in Newton, and a Faculty Fund Grant from Emerson College. In addition to writing introductions to artist monographs, her written work has been published in Art New England, Big Red & Shiny and other art journals. Her first monograph, The Distances Between Us, was published by Trema Förlag (Stockholm, Sweden).

Sarah Pollman holds a BFA and MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University. Currently, she is part of the Education Department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and is faculty at Montserrat College of Art and Emerson College.

Architecture & the color of night

Instructor: Fran Osborn Blaschke

Professional Photographer

www.franosbornblaschke.com

19 May, 2018

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

In this workshop we will be using our digital cameras to photograph architecture at night. But that's just the start.

We will explore helpful equipment, camera settings and aesthetic considerations to help counter the unique problems associated with this type of photography. Then, by thoughtful study of the light and the color of light at night, we will try to combine the architects’ intentions with our own photographic vision of the subject to create something new and personal.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Fran Osborn-Blaschke, fine art photographer and photography instructor,, is a native of Wilmington, Delaware. Photography runs in his family. His father is a retired school photographer and his grandfather and uncle ran a successful portrait studio.

Moving to the Boston area in 1991 Fran freelanced in video. Combining his love of music and video, he found a niche recording local college music recitals. After an introductory photo class at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, Fran continued his education via the New England School of Photography’s workshops and eventually the two-year full-time professional program.

Since 2009 Fran has been an instructor at NESOP, first teaching traditional Color Printing with color negative film and enlargers and then Digital Camera and most recently, Adobe Lightroom. He has also taught Digital Photography workshops at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and, since 2013, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
